Pine Nuts

The Pine nut is the edible seed of various species of pine trees. There are several varieties of the pine nut.

Pine nut kernel is the edible seed of the popular dry fruit belonging to the genus Pinus Pinea. Pinenut is one of the most important cash crop of the tribal people, populary known as ‘chilgoza’ in Urdu and Hindi.

Uses 
Pine nuts can be eaten raw or roasted and are used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes such as cakes, soups and other desserts. It is used in a kind of Italian sauce called pesto as well as used in chocolates. Normally pine nuts are added in vegetable dishes for flavour.

The oil extracted from pine nuts is precious and useful for health benefits. Chilgozas’ are high-fat nuts and are rich in carbohydrates and proteins.

 

The two main varieties overall, are the triangular Chinese pine and the slender Italian Pine nuts.

Height: Pine nut trees reach heights of 5-9 m with diameters of 15-80 cm, depending on the site conditions.

Nut production:

 Only after 18-20 years, will a pine tree start being productive. It is then productive for over 100 years. Some pine trees have been recorded that are over 400 years old.

The fruit: 

The seed are cylindrical in shape and can be up to 2,5 cm in length. One tree can bear about 25 cones, each producing about 100 seeds.

Harvest:

The pine cones are knocked off the tree, dried in the sun and then the kernels are removed by hand.
